Brought to you by Day-Timers, the Brain Injury Recovery Kit is a unique, patented system invented by Lisa Keller – a creative individual who sustained a brain injury – and her case manager, Sandra Knutson, CRC, CCM, CDMS, a professional specializing in the needs of individuals and their families after brain injury.

The Brain Injury Recovery Kit is a step-by-step approach to recovery that can be tailored to each individual’s needs and can be used at an individual’s own pace

Step 1: Learning about Brain Injury and Recovery

In step 1, the Experiencing Person (the term used for the person who has sustained a brain injury) and his/her family can learn more about brain injury and its implications with a set of informative DVDs. The 3 DVD Set features an intimate, engaging, one-on-one conversation with Lisa Keller, an Experiencing Person. She shares the information and strategies she learned or created to help her return to a meaningful life. The DVDs also provide information from medical experts in the field of brain injury recovery. They explain brain injury in clear, easy-to-understand terms.

Step 2: Learning How to Support an Individual With Brain Injury

In step 2, the Experiencing Person and family members are introduced to the Buddy Book, which provides essential insight into the specific needs of the Experiencing Person and his/her Buddy. The Buddy Book teaches an individual how to be a Buddy. It helps family members better understand the effects of brain injury, the cognitive, physical, behavioral, social, and financial changes that may occur, and ways they can help the Experiencing Person cope with these changes.

Step 3: Understanding the Experience of Brain Injury

The Experiencing Person’s Workbook is used, with the support of a Buddy, to progress through the 4 keys to Recovery. The Workbook is filled with information and exercises to help the Experiencing Person proceed, at his/her own pace, through the recovery process.

Step 4: Learning Routines for Organization

In Step 4, the Experiencing Person learns two essential recovery tools for organization and routine. Using the Day-Timer® personal planner, the Experiencing Person can help improve his/her short-term memory – and boost confidence – because everything is tracked in one concise, highly visible place. The planner supports the 4 keys to Recovery and includes plenty of room for scheduling and planning mealtimes, appointments, medications, and much more…all in one place. Plus, it’s an ideal tool for recording progress and celebrating successes.

The Color-Coding System makes it easier for the Experiencing Person to organize daily tasks by sorting them into categories: Family, Work, Money, Urgent-To Do Next, Ongoing Tasks, Friends … and “I Don’t Know Where This Goes.” It’s a “Who, What, Where, Why, and How” system that supports and reinforces memory, attention, and organization through the use of a color or symbol…all neatly packed in individual labeled pouches.
The Kit comes with an orange planner cover. If you’d like to purchase a black cover separately, please go to the link at the top of this page (“If you need to reorder individual supplies, click here”).

Step 5: Using Repetition and Reminders

Repetition is one of the most important methods for learning and “remembering.” The Electronic Message Center is an easy-to-use voice recorder that helps the Experiencing Person as they learn to use the kit. It’s ideal for recording vital reminders about essential daily activities or weekly appointments. More about Step 5
