Day-Timers "Famous-5" Mind-Power Success Tricks

Great ideas are worth repeating. We shared these 5 tips with you several years ago. Did you try them? Well, here they are again, updated and improved… just in time for the school year! Use these proven “mind tricks” to absorb and recall information faster and easier. Great for remembering details of your job, too! Try these 5 ideas and prove it to yourself!

MIND-POWER TRICK #1: Create a Crash-Course CD or Cassette! Record study information on disc or tape. For example, record: “What’s the 5th planet from the sun? (Leave 5 seconds blank time here.) … Jupiter.” Continue with all your study notes. Need to remember pages of information? Simply record, leaving 5 seconds blank before reading any key names, dates, etc., then continue. Play over and over—even in the background while doing other things. Verbally “fill in the blanks” during playback. It burns the information into your brain and works like magic!

MIND-POWER TRICK #2: Memorize Lists with Ease! Take the first letter of each item and create an acronym. Can you remember the sentence: “My Very Educated Mother Just Sent Us Nine Pizzas?” Then you just memorized all the planets and their order from the sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto! Children can learn to spell long words this way, too. To spell “arithmetic,” for example, simply teach them the phrase: “A Rat In Tom’s House May Eat Tom’s Ice Cream.”

MIND-POWER TRICK #3: Be the LAST One Done. When testing, don’t race. Use every minute allotted. Double-check your answers. You’ll find errors and be able to correct them! This also applies to proofing emails, memos, and letters before you send them. Some students purposely rush through their tests to be among the first finished and “impress” their classmates. Teach your kids that school tests are not races, and the teacher’s grade is the only indicator of success.

MIND-POWER TRICK #4: Remember facts easily by creating outlandish "Mental Movies!" (The sillier, the better.) Example: let’s say you need to remember to bring home milk, eggs, bacon, and paper towels. Simply create the mental image of a massive bottle of milk crashing to the floor and an army of military-clad paper towel rolls marching down the store aisle soaking it up. Then imagine the floor turns red hot and dozens of eggs drop from the ceiling… crack on the floor and begin frying… while strips of bacon wriggle up like snakes beside them. Simply run this movie in your mind a few times and your shopping list will be burned into your brain! It works no matter how many items you need to remember. Try 10… 15… 20! You’ll even be able to recall the list backwards, and start from any point within the list! (This is the #1 trick used by memory experts.)

MIND-POWER TRICK #5: Need to read "War and Peace" in 10 days? Divide the number of pages by the number of days you have to read them. By breaking your study work into more manageable pieces, the task becomes less intimidating… you’ll enjoy and remember more… and you’ll feel more relaxed about the assignment.
