| | 5 Ways to Help Your Child Succeed in School
1) Help Them Manage Time Now!
The earlier you introduce your children to time management, the easier it will be for them to establish the positive habits of planning and organizing. Choose a specific time each day for homework. Show them how to break large assignments into smaller, more manageable tasks. Theyll be thrilled to learn that small steps every day will accomplish the task just as well perhaps even better than sitting down and crash-coursing it.
2) "Swiss Cheese" the School Year
"Swiss Cheesing" is the time-management principle of breaking down tasks into their most fundamental sub-tasks and attacking each part individually. Twelve years of school and college can be overwhelming for most kids, so Swiss cheese it for them! To do well in school, they dont need to think about next week or next month. Teach them to take it one day at a time. To succeed, they simply need to do well each day. Challenge them to do just a little bit better tomorrow. To listen a little better
participate a little more
study a few extra minutes. Incremental improvements can become a game
and can propel your child to success!
3) Show Your Child What School Taught You!
For example, when your child is reading, mention how school taught you to read the newspaper and all kinds of fun magazines. When theyre doing math, show them how school helped you count money
go shopping
and make bank deposits so you can buy the things you want. The value of schoolwork is often abstract for kids. Always relate their assignments to something in which they can see a future benefit.
4) Give Your Kid Guidance... Not Answers!
Want your child to think for himself? Too much help teaches that challenges are best solved by others. Dont give the answer. Instead, help guide his thinking so he finds the answer himself. Its far better for his self-esteem, and helps develop his self-confidence and independence.
5) Check Out Day-Timers Student Planners!
Dont forget the one tool that helps students put everything together: the Day-Timer Student Planner! It was designed by students for students! It helps them organize their day
